Over the past 15 years, I’ve travelled extensively across Japan by train, both with and without guests. From the snowy landscapes of Hokkaido to the sub-tropical Kagoshima on Kyushu, Japan’s rail network has taken me everywhere quickly, comfortably, and with remarkable efficiency.
One of the greatest joys of train travel in Japan is how seamlessly it connects every corner of the country. I’ve traveled through the mountains of Shikoku, explored the food culture of Kyushu, and visited countless cities, towns, and hidden destinations in between. Whether boarding a sleek Shinkansen bullet train or a quiet local railway through the countryside, every journey feels organized and stress-free.

As someone who has also travelled on VIA Rail and Amtrak in North America, the difference is striking. While VIA Rail and Amtrak offer beautiful scenic routes and a nostalgic rail experience, train travel in Japan operates on another level when it comes to speed, frequency, and punctuality. In Japan, trains arrive almost exactly on schedule, connections are smooth, and stations are designed for efficiency. Even traveling hundreds of kilometers can feel effortless.
What stands out most is the convenience. Instead of dealing with airport security lines or long highway drives, I can simply board a train, enjoy an ekiben lunch, and watch the scenery change from rice fields to mountains to bustling city skylines. The Shinkansen alone transforms long-distance travel into something fast and relaxing.
Train travel in remote, rural areas also allows you to experience Japan at a slower, more authentic pace. Some of my favorite memories came from stopping in smaller towns I never would have visited otherwise, especially on the Island of Shikoku. Each station offers a glimpse into local life, regional cuisine, and unique culture.
For anyone planning a trip to Japan, I highly recommend exploring the country by rail. After more than a decade of journeys across Japan, travelling by train still feels like part of the adventure itself for me.
